After a brief lift on September 23, the ban on mobile internet in Manipur was reinstated on September 26. This action aimed to curb the dissemination of harmful content on social media, including images and hate messages. Concerns over law and order prompted this decision. Notably, the state government, acknowledging improved conditions and public inconveniences, has now opted to ease the suspension, as conveyed in a notice by T Ranjit Singh, Commissioner (Home).

As per the official notice, the suspension is set to be lifted across Manipur, with the exception of mobile towers within a 2 km radius in specific areas. These include districts like Churachandpur and Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Kakching, Kangpokpi and Imphal West, Kangpokpi and Imphal East, Kangpokpi and Thoubal, and Tengnoupal and Kakching. The decision reflects a targeted approach to ensure continued stability and order in these specified regions.
These districts, predominantly inhabited by either Meiteis or Kukis, have been epicenters of the recent violence, witnessing gunfights, arson, and abductions over the past seven months. The toll of the unrest in Manipur stands at 182 lives lost and over 50,000 displaced. Notably, the lifting of the mobile internet suspension occurred four days post the signing of a peace agreement in New Delhi, where the Centre and Manipur government brokered a deal with the United National Liberation Force (UNLF), the state’s oldest militant outfit.
