As per the official information shared by the forest department, in the last decade, 36 elephants have been hit and killed by trains in Tamil Nadu.

In many states, elephants have been dying on railway tracks. In Odisha, 40 jumbos died in a decade after being hit by freight trains. Even in Tamil Nadu, there have been various deaths of animals because of this. Often animals wander on railway tracks in search of food. The unaware animals get caught in the electric fence and die. Incidents of elephants getting hit by trains have become frequent. To tackle the situation, students came up with a simple apparatus to protect the lives of the animals and prevent further deaths.

As per the official information shared by the forest department, in the last decade, 36 elephants have been hit and killed by trains in Tamil Nadu. Seeing this situation, Sam Jefferson, the son of a labourer, who is studying in Class 10 at Thanjavur’s government school was heartbroken by the news of dying animals. He decided to make an automatic device to prevent the death of wild animals. The device is called Automatic Alarm Bar Controlling Forest Animal Accident which will prevent the death of wild animals.

This is a simple student-made apparatus which has a board with a connector device attached to an auto sensor light and wires attached to it. It works on remote control. A relay device and a siren are connected and a submersible motor pump has been installed to connect these all together. This device helps detect the movement of animals like elephants, bears, deer, foxes and bison.

As soon as it detects an animal, the alarm in the device will be triggered and will ring a loud sound. This will scare the animals away from the railway track. If the sound does not scare the animal then the device has yet another backup option. The control device will trip a relay device connected to it which will operate the motor submerged in water. A tank-like structure has been set up and it will instantly splash water rapidly on the animals through the water pipe. This will make them run away.

Sam Jefferson demonstrated the device at the district-level science fair and the regional-level fair as well. He received a prize and certificate. Initially, the student had many doubts but his supportive teacher encouraged him and gave advice from time to time. The teacher further shared that if the invention is used properly, it will be possible to prevent damage to crops including sugarcane and prevent deaths on railway tracks. Sam made this apparatus at a very low cost in just four days and hopes to be able to contribute more with his inventions in future.
