Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal is making noise for both good and bad reasons. While the film is being criticised for its misogyny, violence and vulgarity by a section of the audience, others are lapping it up, leading to huge box office numbers. After an impressive first weekend (Rs 201.5 crore), the film appeared to pass the crucial Monday test with flying colours. On day four of release, the Ranbir Kapoor-led film registered an impressive total of Rs 39.90 crore in the domestic market, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. This brought the film’s four-day total to Rs 241.43 crore. T-Series reported the film’s four-day global gross as Rs 425 crore, which means that Animal will overtake Ranbir’s Brahmastra by today.

Animal’s first Monday collections are higher than those registered by this year’s big blockbusters, Jawan and Pathaan. While Jawan earned Rs 32.92 crore, Pathaan made Rs 26.50 crore on its first Monday. Animal also surpassed the first Monday collections of Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 (Rs 38.70 crore). The only two films to have a better Monday collection than Animal are Tiger 3 (Rs 59.25 crore) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (Rs 40.25 crore). It is worth noting that Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 achieved the feat since it was a holiday release, and debuted on a Sunday, making Monday only its second day in theatres.

The overall Hindi occupancy of Animal was recorded at 48.92% on Monday. The Telugu and Tamil occupancy was 33.30% and 17.73% respectively. Until Sunday, as per the makers, Animal had earned Rs 356 crore ($42 million) worldwide, finishing its first weekend as the biggest film in the world, ahead of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.

Animal was released in the theatres alongside Meghana Gulzar’s Sam Bahadur, which it easily out-performed at the box office. The Vicky Kaushal-starrer military drama earned Rs 3.5 crore on Monday, bringing its total collection to Rs 29.05 crore.

Despite all the criticism, Animal is expected to rule the ticket counters until Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki releases on December 21. Ashish Saksena, COO – Cinemas, BookMyShow, shared that Animal has already sold over 4.5 million on BookMyShow and said, “Animal is proving to be a massive hit at the Box Office, witnessing fantastic sustenance and stellar excitement among Indian audiences across the length and breadth of the country, particularly in HyderabadDelhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune.”
